TO: Obama, Pelosi, Bishop, Rein, Schumer, Gillibrand, ClintonIsrael
The administration’s stand on Israel encourages the anti-Semitic rants of Hamas, Hezbollah, Iran and other fundamental Islamic organizations and countries. The administration’s stand on Israel reminds me of the hate speech of the Ku Klux Klan and the Nation of Islam. Most of us Americans have come a long way from the blind prejudices of the past. We're confused about many of the actions of this administration. Eric Holder's and Loretta King's protection of Samir Shabazz and Jerry Jackson – with the apparent support of Barack Obama. Steny Hoyer's statement that Americans were asked to participate in the health care debacle No one asked us – it was jammed down our collective throats. The blind eye to Chris Dodd's and Charlie Rangle's ethics problems. The pressure to return Manuel Zelaya to office in Honduras. The treatment of the Dalai Lama and Benjamin Netanyahu.
I have a hard time understanding how our leaders have taken us down a divisive path from working toward religious and racial harmony to the polarities of distrust. Rev. Wright says, referring to the public distancing between himself and Obama, “Them Jews aren’t going to let him talk to me…” Is that the root of the turn against Israel? Is Obama being kept apart from Wright by Rahm Emanuel or other Jews? Is Obama rebelling against his handlers? Is this his way of asserting his authority at the expense of our countries' national interests?
We, the people, are angered about the nuclear aspirations of Iran and its stated intentions to destroy Israel. A question that I asked of Chuck Schumer this summer in Riverhead, NY about US support of Israel was met with a flippant response about him being a Jew but that didn’t give me a clear idea of his support for Israel. I suspect that there may be many confident and comfortable Jews in our government who presume that there is support for Israel. Hillary Clinton’s popularity in Kiryas Joel and with other Jewish groups is interesting. Some day those folks will become aware that they too have been lulled into a state of complacency with the false promises of the Obama campaign. The political aspirations of Clinton will, I suspect, be revealed as those of an opportunist. Aipac may already have come to that realization.
As a Christian, I strongly support Israel and expect my government to do the same. During my 69 years I’ve had many opportunities to observe the world’s treatment of Israel and it hasn’t been encouraging. I remember when Israel was pressured and gave up developed territory to the Palestinians – the prosperous greenhouse businesses left behind were stripped of their copper and other salvageable materials by the Palestinians and reduced to rubble.
Israel’s need for self-preservation is completely understandable. Bret Stephens’ article, “The Settlements Aren’t the Problem” in the March 15, 2010 edition of the Wall Street Journal says that, “The Israeli-Palestinian conflict isn’t territorial. It’s existential. Israelis are now broadly prepared to live with a Palestinian state along their borders. Palestinians are not yet willing to live with a Jewish state along theirs.” (See enclosed folder.)
Why can’t your political tribe recognize that the best defense against killers who want to destroy you is strength, courage and preparedness? I have the feeling that if you folks were in office on December 7, 1941 you would have initiated peace talks.
Remember what God said about His people: “I will bless those who bless you, and I will curse him who curses you; And in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.” Genesis 12:3
Don't be like Farrakhan or Wright or Jackson and pass judgment on Israel based on your personal feelings or observations – that's God's job. Remember, God is very much alive – it's Nietzsche who's dead.
